Listen:
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, (Hebrews 12:1 NIV)
Reflect:
In May twenty of us enjoyed a beautiful (sunny!!) weekend in the Cotswolds countryside. Speaker, Kim brought engaging talks and many others took part and blessed the time we had together.
A great cloud of witnesses – It was encouraging to be right in the middle of a small cloud of lovely witnesses. Women who love and trust Jesus, glad to take time away from the stresses and challenges of everyday life and spend time together.
let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. Part of Kim’s message to us was about discovering and dealing with those things that we should get rid of (squirrel’s nests – apparently stay hidden but need to be cleared out for restoration to take place). We have a God who restores our souls, but in the process, there may be some painful work to be done.
This is about being ready to race. How ridiculous to think of anyone racing carrying bags or wearing unnecessary clothing? Perhaps we can laugh at this picture whilst allowing it to challenge us? Entangling sins makes me think of the things that trip me up. A critical remark (given or received), getting stressed about unimportant stuff, making excuses or covering up when it would be better to be honest and come clean about a mistake. Putting off things I need to do……Or, more serious stuff such as unforgiveness.
And let us run with perseverance which (Oh dear) comes from suffering. (Romans 5:3-5) But then results in character and hope (Yeah!). And God’s love poured into our hearts (Hallelujah!)
the race marked out for us, The Lifesprings School of Ministry helps women to discover what God has put in their hearts, what He has uniquely equipped them to do.
Prayer of Response:
Lord Jesus, we fix our eyes on you. Thank you that you go ahead of us into every situation. Keep us on the right track Lord. It is you who will perfect our faith. Thank you that you endured the cross for us. That we can share in your joy knowing you have won the day!
Questions to Ponder:
- Can you see the race marked out for you? Look at the ‘Strengths’ in the photo. Take some time to think about your own strengths. Write them down. How might God want to use those strengths?
- Look at the photo of the open door. Is God opening a door for you?

A grandmother, retired. I live in Leamington Spa, near to two of my children and their families. I enjoy being creative, keeping up with old friends, and making new ones, supporting family, my local church and Lifesprings in the UK. I aim to do more writing soon!
Note: A sea anchor is a device that is streamed from a boat in heavy weather. Its purpose is to stabilize the vessel and to limit progress through the water. Our race is not a sprint, steadfastness will keep us going on the marathon!
Photos above were taken by Elaine Davis from the Lifesprings UK retreat in May.
