Listen:
Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35)
Reflect
Our home church meets with young adults 18 to 27 years old. One recent Sunday meeting, we invited a 23 year old young man, a friend of a church member to join us to share God’s word with him. During this meeting, we shared about how God works in our lives among other topics. I shared the verse for this week’s Lectio Divina: John 6:35 with the group. They shared their feelings and thoughts back. And there were two main lessons we came up with:
Come to Him: We know in great detail how to feed our flesh- healthy lifestyle and proper nutrition etc. But we often forget to feed our spirit. I think we do not realize that sometimes busyness and problems can be the cause of our hunger. When we have spiritual hunger, we can become insecure, frustrated, and disappointed. For this kind of hunger, we have to persuade ourselves to do three things. First of all, come to Him and pray, because He says that whoever comes to him will never be hungry. And we must say to Him, “Yes God I believe in You and put my faith in You”. Next, cling to His Word, His word fills us, feeds us, and makes us strong. Lastly, share the Good News with others. Share the process with your home church, youth, and faith family. Yes, most importantly, we must take that first step of coming to Him in prayer.
Believe in Him: He is the One sent by God. He is the true One life resource we need. He is our daily bread of life. We do not come to Jesus for a better life, we come to Jesus because He is life. We cannot only work everyday for a living, we must also eat and drink to live. In the same way, spiritually we can’t live without Jesus and the spiritual food He offers us. He is the Bread of Life our souls need. He promises we will never go hungry or be thirsty. He calls us to walk by faith and not by sight.
Questions to Ponder:
How do you know that your spirit is hungry?
How do you feed your spirit?
Do you come to the Lord to avoid hunger, or do you come to the Lord because He is the bread of life?
Prayer of Response:
Dear God, every day we want to walk by faith, not by sight. Every day we want You to fill us, to feed our spirit. In Jesus name Amen.
